From Formula 1 to Independent Fine Watchmaking: An Interview with Didier Cavasino
What do Formula 1 engines and haute horlogerie tourbillons have in common? For Didier Cavasino, the answer rests on three pillars: precision, rigor, and passion.
An engineer’s journey without boundaries
A graduate of Arts et Métiers with experience in motorsports in Germany, Didier was not destined for a watchmaker’s workbench. Yet it was this industrial rigor, forged in the world of Formula 1 and MotoGP, that he brought to the biggest names in watchmaking. After some fifteen years optimizing production at Rolex and overseeing complications at Bulgari, he chose to return to the very essence of the craft: artisanal watchmaking.
The audacity of independence
Creating one’s own brand is a challenge; doing so with a tourbillon as the first piece is a technical exploit. For Didier, this choice is a tribute to a defining encounter with a Daniel Roth watch in 2001, which transformed his vision of haute horlogerie. Today, he personally oversees the development of his timepieces, surrounded by a network of elite artisans to ensure uncompromising finishes.
Convinced that innovation goes hand in hand with sustainability, he cites, for example, the use of recycled steel produced in a solar furnace, proving that fine watchmaking can be both traditional and modern.
A Message for the Next Generation
Speaking to students and young talent, Didier emphasizes that Switzerland offers a unique ecosystem where close ties with suppliers enable incredibly rewarding careers. His advice is clear: “Believe in yourself, take risks, and if you do something, see it through to the end.”
